Nathan Rajlich 025f53c306 console: refactor the console module to be reusable

So that multiple instances can be created pointing
to different writable streams.

This is needed for #3876.

To build:

Unix/Macintosh. Requires python 2.6 or 2.7 and GNU make 3.81 or newer:

./configure
make
make install

Windows:

vcbuild.bat

To run the tests:
