This new function exposes at SQL level some information related to
multixacts, not available until now. This data is useful for monitoring
purposes, especially for workloads that make a heavy use of multixacts:
- num_mxids, number of MultiXact IDs in use.
- num_members, number of member entries in use.
- members_size, bytes used by num_members in pg_multixact/members/.
- oldest_multixact: oldest MultiXact still needed.
This patch has been originally proposed when MultiXactOffset was still
32 bits, to monitor wraparound. This part is not relevant anymore since
bd8d9c9bdf that has widen MultiXactOffset to 64 bits. The monitoring
of disk space usage for the members is still relevant.
Some tests are added to check this function, in the shape of one
isolation test with concurrent transactions that take a ROW SHARE lock,
and some SQL tests for pg_read_all_stats. Some documentation is added
to explain some patterns that can come from the information provided by
the function.

This request allows a support function to replace a function call
appearing in FROM (typically a set-returning function) with an
equivalent SELECT subquery. The subquery will then be subject
to the planner's usual optimizations, potentially allowing a much
better plan to be generated. While the planner has long done this
automatically for simple SQL-language functions, it's now possible
for extensions to do it for functions outside that group.
Notably, this could be useful for functions that are presently
implemented in PL/pgSQL and work by generating and then EXECUTE'ing
a SQL query.

Commit 7406ab623f added a gist support function that we internally
refer to by the symbol GIST_STRATNUM_PROC. This translated from
"well-known" strategy numbers to opfamily-specific strategy numbers.
However, we later (commit 630f9a43ce) changed this to fit into
index-AM-level compare type mapping, so this function actually now
maps from compare type to opfamily-specific strategy numbers. So this
name is no longer fitting.
Moreover, the index AM level also supports the opposite, a function to
map from strategy number to compare type. This is currently not
supported in gist, but one might wonder what this function is supposed
to be called when it is added.
This patch changes the naming of the gist-level functionality to be
more in line with the index-AM-level functionality. This makes sense
because these are essentially the same thing on different levels.
This also changes the names of the externally visible functions that
are provided for use as such a support function.

A few places that access this catalog don't set up an active
snapshot before potentially accessing its TOAST table. However,
roname (the replication origin name) is the only varlena column, so
this is only a problem if the name requires out-of-line storage.
This commit removes its TOAST table to avoid needing to set up a
snapshot. It also places a limit on replication origin names so
that attempts to set long names will fail with a more user-friendly
error. Those chosen limit of 512 bytes should be sufficient to
avoid "row is too big" errors independent of BLCKSZ, but it should
also be lenient enough for all reasonable use-cases.

For AIO, and also some other recent patches, we need the ability to call
relpath() in a critical section. Until now that was not feasible, as it
allocated memory.
The fact that relpath() allocated memory also made it awkward to use in log
messages because we had to take care to free the memory afterwards. Which we
e.g. didn't do for when zeroing out an invalid buffer.
We discussed other solutions, e.g. filling a pre-allocated buffer that's
passed to relpath(), but they all came with plenty downsides or were larger
projects. The easiest fix seems to be to make relpath() return the path by
value.
To be able to return the path by value we need to determine the maximum length
of a relation path. This patch adds a long #define that computes the exact
maximum, which is verified to be correct in a regression test.
As this change the signature of relpath(), extensions using it will need to
adapt their code. We discussed leaving a backward-compat shim in place, but
decided it's not worth it given the use of relpath() doesn't seem widespread.

This changes commit 7406ab623f in that the gist strategy number
mapping support function is changed to use the CompareType enum as
input, instead of the "well-known" RT*StrategyNumber strategy numbers.
This is a bit cleaner, since you are not dealing with two sets of
strategy numbers. Also, this will enable us to subsume this system
into a more general system of using CompareType to define operator
semantics across index methods.

This function returns the name, size, and last modification time of
each regular file in pg_wal/summaries. This allows administrators
to grant privileges to view the contents of this directory without
granting privileges on pg_ls_dir(), which allows listing the
contents of many other directories. This commit also gives the
pg_monitor predefined role EXECUTE privileges on the new
pg_ls_summariesdir() function.

This is support function 12 for the GiST AM and translates
"well-known" RT*StrategyNumber values into whatever strategy number is

required). We will use this to support temporal PRIMARY
KEY/UNIQUE/FOREIGN KEY/FOR PORTION OF functionality.
This commit adds two implementations, one for internal GiST opclasses
(just an identity function) and another for btree_gist opclasses. It
updates btree_gist from 1.7 to 1.8, adding the support function for
all its opclasses.

036bdcec9 added some code to perform some verification on portions of
the planner costs in EXPLAIN ANALYZE but failed to consider that some
buildfarm animals such as bushmaster and taipan are running very low jit
thresholds. This caused these animals to fail as they were outputting
JIT-related details in EXPLAIN ANALYZE for the newly added tests.
Here we avoid that by disabling JIT for the plans in question.

This function returns the chunk_id of an on-disk TOASTed value. If
the value is un-TOASTed or not on-disk, it returns NULL. This is
useful for identifying which values are actually TOASTed and for
investigating "unexpected chunk number" errors.

a suggestion from Magnus Hagander.
While on it, one of the output arguments is renamed from "segno" to

This function takes in input a WAL segment name and returns a tuple made
of the segment sequence number (dependent on the WAL segment size of the
cluster) and its timeline, as of a thin SQL wrapper around the existing
XLogFromFileName().
This function has multiple usages, like being able to compile a LSN from
a file name and an offset, or finding the timeline of a segment without
having to do to some maths based on the first eight characters of the
segment.

As the recent commit 05d4cbf (reverted after as a448e49) has proved,
there is zero coverage for the four SQL functions that can scan the
control file data:
- pg_control_checkpoint()
- pg_control_init()
- pg_control_recovery()
- pg_control_system()
This commit adds a minimal coverage for these functions, checking that
their execution is able to complete. This would have been enough to
catch the problems introduced in the commit mentioned above. More
checks could be done for each individual fields, but it is unclear
whether this would be better than the other checks in place in the
backend code.

It's allowed for an installation to remove postgresql.auto.conf,
so don't rely on that being present. Instead probe whether we can
read postmaster.pid. (If you've removed that, you broke the data
directory's multiple-postmaster interlock, not to mention pg_ctl.)

There wasn't an especially nice way to read all of a file while
passing missing_ok = true. Add an additional overloaded variant
to support that use-case.
While here, refactor the C code to avoid a rats-nest of PG_NARGS
checks, instead handling the argument collection in the outer
wrapper functions. It's a bit longer this way, but far more
straightforward.
(Upon looking at the code coverage report for genfile.c, I was
impelled to also add a test case for pg_stat_file() -- tgl)

This system function was being triggered once in the main regression
test suite to check its SRF configuration, and more in other test
modules but nothing checked the behavior of the options missing_ok and
include_dot_dirs. This commit adds some tests for both options, to
avoid mistakes if this code is manipulated in the future.

The idea behind this patch is to make it possible to run individual
test scripts without running the entire core test suite. Making all
the scripts completely independent would involve a massive rewrite,
and would probably be worse for coverage of things like concurrent DDL.
So this patch just does what seems practical with limited changes.
The net effect is that any test script can be run after running
limited earlier dependencies:
* all scripts depend on test_setup
* many scripts depend on create_index
* other dependencies are few in number, and are documented in
the parallel_schedule file.
To accomplish this, I chose a small number of commonly-used tables
and moved their creation and filling into test_setup. Later scripts
are expected not to modify these tables' data contents, for fear of
affecting other scripts' results. Also, our former habit of declaring
all C functions in one place is now gone in favor of declaring them
where they're used, if that's just one script, or in test_setup if
necessary.
There's more that could be done to remove some of the remaining
inter-script dependencies, but significantly more-invasive changes
would be needed, and at least for now it doesn't seem worth it.

Teach canonicalize_path() how to strip all unnecessary uses of "."
and "..", replacing the previous ad-hoc code that got rid of only
some such cases. In particular, we can always remove all such
uses from absolute paths.
The proximate reason to do this is that Windows rejects paths
involving ".." in some cases (in particular, you can't put one in a
symlink), so we ought to be sure we don't use ".." unnecessarily.
Moreover, it seems like good cleanup on general principles.
There is other path-munging code that could be simplified now, but
we'll leave that for followup work.
It is tempting to call this a bug fix and back-patch it. On the other
hand, the misbehavior can only be reached if a highly privileged user
does something dubious, so it's not unreasonable to say "so don't do
that". And this patch could result in unexpected behavioral changes,
in case anybody was expecting uses of ".." to stay put. So at least
for now, just put it in HEAD.

Previously pg_log_backend_memory_contexts() could request to
log the memory contexts of backends, but not of auxiliary processes
such as checkpointer. This commit enhances the function so that
it can also send the request to auxiliary processes. It's useful to
look at the memory contexts of those processes for debugging purpose
and better understanding of the memory usage pattern of them.
Note that pg_log_backend_memory_contexts() cannot send the request
to logger or statistics collector. Because this logging request
mechanism is based on shared memory but those processes aren't
connected to that.

This commit adds a set of functions able to look at the contents of
various paths related to replication slots:
- pg_ls_logicalsnapdir, for pg_logical/snapshots/
- pg_ls_logicalmapdir, for pg_logical/mappings/
- pg_ls_replslotdir, for pg_replslot/<slot_name>/
These are intended to be used by monitoring tools. Unlike pg_ls_dir(),
execution permission can be granted to non-superusers. Roles members of
pg_monitor gain have access to those functions.

Remove superuser check, allowing any user granted permissions on
pg_log_backend_memory_contexts() to log the memory contexts of any
backend.
Note that this could allow a privileged non-superuser to log the
memory contexts of a superuser backend, but as discussed, that does
not seem to be a problem.

Commit 3e98c0bafb added pg_backend_memory_contexts view to display
the memory contexts of the backend process. However its target process
is limited to the backend that is accessing to the view. So this is
not so convenient when investigating the local memory bloat of other
backend process. To improve this situation, this commit adds
pg_log_backend_memory_contexts() function that requests to log
the memory contexts of the specified backend process.
This information can be also collected by calling
MemoryContextStats(TopMemoryContext) via a debugger. But
this technique cannot be used in some environments because no debugger
is available there. So, pg_log_backend_memory_contexts() allows us to
see the memory contexts of specified backend more easily.
Only superusers are allowed to request to log the memory contexts
because allowing any users to issue this request at an unbounded rate
would cause lots of log messages and which can lead to denial of service.
On receipt of the request, at the next CHECK_FOR_INTERRUPTS(),
the target backend logs its memory contexts at LOG_SERVER_ONLY level,
so that these memory contexts will appear in the server log but not
be sent to the client. It logs one message per memory context.
Because if it buffers all memory contexts into StringInfo to log them
as one message, which may require the buffer to be enlarged very much
and lead to OOM error since there can be a large number of memory
contexts in a backend.
When a backend process is consuming huge memory, logging all its
memory contexts might overrun available disk space. To prevent this,
now this patch limits the number of child contexts to log per parent
to 100. As with MemoryContextStats(), it supposes that practical cases
where the log gets long will typically be huge numbers of siblings
under the same parent context; while the additional debugging value
from seeing details about individual siblings beyond 100 will not be large.
There was another proposed patch to add the function to return
the memory contexts of specified backend as the result sets,
instead of logging them, in the discussion. However that patch is
not included in this commit because it had several issues to address.

This extends the fixes made in commit 085b6b667 to other SRFs with the
same bug, namely pg_logdir_ls(), pgrowlocks(), pg_timezone_names(),
pg_ls_dir(), and pg_tablespace_databases().
Also adjust various comments and documentation to warn against
expecting to clean up resources during a ValuePerCall SRF's final
call.
Back-patch to all supported branches, since these functions were
all born broken.

I forgot that the WAL directory might hold other files besides WAL
segments, notably including new segments still being filled.
That means a blind test for the first file's size being 16MB can
fail. Restrict based on file name length to make it more robust.
Per buildfarm.
This coding technique is undesirable because (a) it leaks the FD for
the rest of the transaction if the SRF is not run to completion, and
(b) allocated FDs are a scarce resource, but multiple interleaved
uses of the relevant functions could eat many such FDs.
In v11 and later, a query such as "SELECT pg_ls_waldir() LIMIT 1"
yields a warning about the leaked FD, and the only reason there's
no warning in earlier branches is that fd.c didn't whine about such
leaks before commit 9cb7db3f0. Even disregarding the warning, it
wouldn't be too hard to run a backend out of FDs with careless use
of these SQL functions.
Hence, rewrite the function so that it reads the directory within
a single call, returning the results as a tuplestore rather than
via value-per-call mode.
There are half a dozen other built-in SRFs with similar problems,
but let's fix this one to start with, just to see if the buildfarm
finds anything wrong with the code.
In passing, fix bogus error report for stat() failure: it was
whining about the directory when it should be fingering the
individual file. Doubtless a copy-and-paste error.
Back-patch to v10 where this function was added.

Add support function requests for estimating the selectivity, cost,
and number of result rows (if a SRF) of the target function.
The lack of a way to estimate selectivity of a boolean-returning
function in WHERE has been a recognized deficiency of the planner
since Berkeley days. This commit finally fixes it.
In addition, non-constant estimates of cost and number of output
rows are now possible. We still fall back to looking at procost
and prorows if the support function doesn't service the request,
of course.
To make concrete use of the possibility of estimating output rowcount
for SRFs, this commit adds support functions for array_unnest(anyarray)
and the integer variants of generate_series; the lack of plausible
rowcount estimates for those, even when it's obvious to a human,
has been a repeated subject of complaints. Obviously, much more
could now be done in this line, but I'm mostly just trying to get
the infrastructure in place.

An example use-case is "CHECK(num_nonnulls(a,b,c) = 1)" to assert that
exactly one of a,b,c isn't NULL. The functions are variadic, so they
can also be pressed into service to count the number of null or nonnull
elements in an array.
